What is search engine?

Search engine is software designed to perform keyword based search over a large number of documents.

Small programmes known as robots, bots, spiders or web crawlers, collect documents, such as web pages and pdf files, from websites on a periodic basis. These documents are then indexed in large data storage systems, usually databases.

When a user types in keywords on a search engine website, search engine produces a list of results ranked according to search engine's criteria. Most popular search engines include Google, Yahoo, MSN Search, AOL Search, Ask Jeeves and Lycos.

What is search engine optimisation?

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is approach taken to achieve better search engine page rank for a website based on a set of keywords. This means that a website can be found fairly easily and quickly by the users of the search engines if they type specific keywords or keyword phrases related to the content on the website.

Many of the websites that use the methods mentioned above are created for search engines only and do not help the web users find useful information. These websites are sometimes banned from search engine listings as they do not adhere to the guidelines provided by the search engines.
